Chapter Ten
Genesis
We left our old home after giving the keys to Stephanie and Armando, and since it was already getting late, we decided to grab something to eat at the grocery store and cook in the RV.
I was tired and watching Amos already asleep made me want to lay down next to him and close my eyes.
âAre you full?â Otis asked, nodding at my plate.
I shook my head and smiled at him. âIâll eat up.â
âYou seem absent. Something on your mind?â
âIâm just a little tired. Itâs been a long day,â I said quietly.
He reached over the small table and placed his hand over mine, threading his fingers through mine gently. âIâll do the dishes once weâre done eating so you can go to bed. Sound good?â
Otis did so much for me that I often times felt bad. Sure, I took care of our son while he went to work, and I cooked breakfast and dinner every day for him so he wouldnât have to stress about eating before and after work, but he was the main source of our income to pay for all our bills and food, and that seemed to be a lot already.
But Otis was a pleaser, and whenever I didnât feel good or struggled with something, he made sure I got a break.
âThank you,â I whispered, squeezing his fingers gently.
âAnything for you, love. Now, eat up and then go to bed. Iâll be quick in the kitchen.â
After I was done eating, I headed straight to the bathroom to brush my teeth and put my pajamas on, and when I went back out to go to bed, I saw someone walking around outside.
We were parked on an empty parking lot at the edge of town, knowing locals wouldnât park their cars here at night, so I wasnât expecting this person out here tonight.
âDid we lock the doors?â
âYeah, why?â
I looked over at Otis who was standing in the kitchen, then I moved my gaze back to the window to watch the person outside walk closer to the RV. âThereâs someone out there.â
Otis put the plates down and walked over to the door to look outside, and when the sensors on the RV got triggered, the lights went on and the man immediately stopped.
âAh, shit,â Otis murmured. âStay here.â
I frowned and stepped closer to him because I wasnât going to let him go out there alone, and when I looked outside again, I finally realized who that man standing outside our RV was.
âOh, noâ¦whatâs he doing here?â
âI have no idea, but I want you to stay in here. Go to bed,â he demanded calmly, but I wasnât going to let him go out there on his own, unprotected.
It was Colson standing there in the bright lights of the RV, with his hands pushed deep into his pockets.
We were prepared for the possible encounter with him, but I really hoped we wouldnât have to deal with him.
âStay inside,â Otis told me again, but I didnât listen. His safety was more
